Migrants to Wait Four Years before Welfare Access

Under a new government bill, migrants granted permanent skilled or family visas after 1 January 2019 will have to wait four years for Centrelink pay­ments such as Newstart or con­cessions cards.

The Greens have criticised Labor for supporting the Coali­tion government’s move. Sena­tor Nick McKim attacked the Labor Party angrily and argued that the government’s goal was to get budget savings at the expense of thousands of migrants. The legislation only passed with the support from Labour.
